The GreenFerm project aims to revolutionize the sustainability of microalgae production by optimizing heterotrophic cultivation. The main objective is to significantly reduce the environmental footprint and production costs of microalgae biomass, transforming the process into a circular model.
The strategy focuses on a three angles approach: first, integrating low-cost agro-food by-products as alternative carbon sources; second, implementing energy-efficient strategies; and third, valorizing CO₂ streams through their reuse in the process.
This integrated approach is designed to produce biomass with enhanced nutritional profiles, specifically rich in protein or β-glucans. The consortium will work to optimize fermenters parameters, improve overall productivity, and conduct a comprehensive sustainability assessment, including life cycle analysis and economic feasibility.
